Application for a Master's study programme with a first, undergraduate university degree at a foreign higher education institution

We are pleased that you have decided to study at Goethe Universität Frankfurt and would like to apply for a Master’s study programme.

The following documents must be submitted when applying for a Master’s study programme:
Academic records






  •  The first undergraduate university degree 
    In most cases, a Bachelor’s degree, but other degrees are also possible, such as a Diplom or Magister (German university degrees). If you are not sure whether the content of your first university degree is compatible with the study programme offered here, please contact the student advisory service (which can be found on the application page under Overview of the Master’s study programme and application procedure).
  • The Transcript of Records
    This document serves as proof of the content of your study programme. If there is no Transcript of Records in your country, please send us a comparable document giving the subjects and marks.
    You will need this document if you have to prove certain study content. If you are not sure, then please upload the transcript using the upload function and send it to the indicated address for applications.
  •  Proof of secondary school education
    (university entrance qualification such as A-levels, IB, Lise diplomasi, High School Diploma, etc.)

  • APS-certificate
    For applicants from Indien, Vietnam and the People’s Republic of China: they need to submit a original copy of the APS-certificate of academic screening issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre (Akademische Prüfstelle - APS).

All certificates, records and proofs of language skills must be submitted in their original language together with a certified translation into German or English. Certificates and translations must be certified.
Certificates German Language

In order to apply for one of our Master’s programmes with German as language of instruction you have to submit a DSH-2 certificate within the application deadline.

Enrolment without a passed DSH-2-test (or an equivalent certificate) is not possible, even if you might get an admission for the Master’s programme.

If the programme’s language of instruction is English you don’t need any German language skills when applying/enrolling. However, we do of course recommend having at least some basic German knowledge for your every day interactions.


The following certificates are being recognized as equivalents to the DSH-2 certificate
:

  • TestDaF (German as a foreign language test): all results being at least at level TDN 4
  • Goethe certificate C2
  • KMK examination: German language diploma second class (DSD II) with level C1 throughout
  • Telc German C1 higher education: with a result of “satisfactory”, “good” or “very good”
  • KDS and GDS (Kleines/Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom – small/big German language certificate), Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP)
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung II

Also the following educational qualifications:

  • Feststellungsprüfung (university assessment test; Studienkolleg) mit Prüfungsteil Deutsch
  • German Abitur (certification of eligibility for university entrance) or equivalent certificates from Austria, Switzerland or Liechtenstein (with German as first language)
  • Foreign certificates according to KMK-resolution (as of 02.06.1995 in the version from 23./24.03.2016) 
  • Intermediate school leaving certificate ("Mittlere Reife") at a school with German as main language (continuous lessons in German until graduation with the minimum grade „ausreichend“ in German in the school leaving certificate) in combination with one of the following certificates:
  • A-Level „German“ of the british General Certificate of Education, Higher Grade in „German“ in the scottish Certificate of Education or Standard Level in "German" of the IB Diploma
Additonal documents   


Additional proof and documents may be necessary depending on the admission and study requirements specific to the respective Master’s study programme. These could be:

  •  Proof of language skills
    This basically means English language skills that need to be proven either by university entrance qualifications or a foreign language certificate.
Additional proof and documents
  •  Proof of courses in the Bachelor’s programme that are relevant to the Master’s programme

 Additional documents, such as 

  • CV
  • letter of motivation
  • letter of recommendation

The online-application procedure*  Please complete the online-application procedure in full. The upload function in the online portal allows you to upload documents that need to be submitted. However, the upload does not replace written submission of the required documents and records. Please send your translated and certified copies of the necessary documents/certificates and/or records to the following address:

Always give your application number (which you will receive in an e-mail from uni-assist) when sending your documents by post.

Application documents that are sent directly to Goethe Universität Frankfurt cannot be considered! Please make sure that you send your application to the Berlin address given above!

Please note: Submitting documents later is only possible if the application procedure allows for this. The application documents must be submitted by the end of the application deadline. 

 

Next steps:

Setting up an account:
  • You will need to set up an account for online applications.
  • After entering a few basic details, you will receive an e-mail with a link to activate your account. You can now log on and complete your application in several sessions.
Entering your data:
  • Please first fill in the form under "My account"
  • Then add your desired study programmes (up to three are possible). Please make sure to answer the "additional application-related questions" regarding your desired study programme. If you are using the upload function, please check that the path to your documents is displayed correctly. 
  • Please also check if there are forms or information relating to your study programmes that are available as downloads and if so please use them.
Completing your application:
  • The last step is to send the data using the button "Proceed to checkout" and finish the process.
  • Please note: After transmitting the data, they cannot be modified anymore.
  • Supplemental information and modifications may only be sent to uni-assist via e-mail and giving your application number.

  * Information on data protection for the on-line application procedure for a study place:
The data collected during the on-line application are necessary for conducting the selection procedure according to the provisions of Hessische Immatrikulationsverordnung ( Hesse’s enrolment regulations).
The obligation to enter data marked as necessary is settled in § 64 paragraph 4 HHG (University Act of Hesse) linked to § 17 para. 1 of Hesse’s enrolment regulations. The processing and use of personal data will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the data protection law of Hesse in the relevant valid version. The data are used exclusively for the on-line application procedure.
If you are granted admission to a Master’s programme, the stored data is used for enrolling the student into the administration system.
All data submitted by applicants are deleted after one semester irrespective of the above-mentioned usage. The data of applicants who have applied using the on-line application procedure but have failed to submit a formal application form to the university within the application deadline are deleted immediately once the deadline has expired.
