Overview

Course content and focus areas  The Institute of Physical Geography at Universität Frankfurt with its several working groups (active both nationally and internationally) covers a wide range of content and methods in the field of physical geography. The research-based Master’s programme in Physical Geography, which focuses on the relationship between man and the environment in the past, present and future, benefits from this broad approach, and the complex networks and regional, national and global challenges that emerge shape the contents during the four semesters of the programme.

The flexible structure of the programme and individual tutoring allows students to develop their own profiles. The programme focuses on learning and researching and therefore qualifies students for specific activities in both research and industry. Students can specialise in each of the four semesters. Interactions between relief, soil, water and vegetation are all part of the programme as well as physical-geographical methods both in the laboratory and outdoors. The programme also includes methods of processing geo-information and remote sensing as well as procedures for shaping the environment that are particularly useful in bio-geographical and hydrological research and practice. These content-related and methodological approaches are strictly orientated towards current theoretical and applied projects in Europe and Africa.

General lectures are offered in all of the four semesters in order to increase student’s basic knowledge of physical geography and to prepare them for the professional world. Excursions and seminar days are central elements of the Master’s programme; an (international) practical or research work placement will give students the possibility to acquire practical skills in Germany or abroad.
