Overview

Course content and focus areas  The focus of the Master’s degree in Empirical Linguistics is on the in-depth expertise and methods that are necessary to explore and analyse natural human languages with empirical procedures. It covers both modern and ancient human languages and aims to describe aspects that are specific to these languages as well as general aspects of language and speech, to classify these aspects on the basis of typology and historical genetics and to explain them. Research into these languages covers their usage as “spoken languages” in everyday communication processes on the one hand, but on the other all written forms of natural languages used, thereby taking into account and focusing particularly on the literary traditions linked to these languages, their socio-historical conditions of use or other phenomena linked to their usage.

Conditions of admission

Admission requirements
  • successful completion of the B.A. in Empirical Linguistics with the relevant focus, or a comparable Bachelor’s programme. Admission and the comparability of degrees is decided upon by the Department 9 examination committee.
  • Applicants with an international university entrance qualification and Bachelor's degree must prove sufficient German language skills according to the regulations of the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH), the German language test for university entrance.
Provisional admission
  • it is possible for applicants who have not completed their B.A. degree when applying for the Master’s programme to enrol for the course, with the university retaining the right to refuse an applicant, provided that the modular examinations of the B.A. have been passed with an average grade that suggests that the overall grade necessary for admission to the Master’s programme will be met, and also provided that the Bachelor’s thesis has already been submitted, but not yet marked. For provisional admissions, applicants need to submit proof of enrolment in the B.A. as well as a detailed description of the current status and estimated finishing date of the degree. The examination committee decides on provisional admissions and also whether the prerequisites for entry have been met. In the event the requirements for admission to the Master’s programme have not been submitted to the examination committee within one semester, the committee will report this to the student’s office in order to object to the provisional admission to the Master’s degree.
Mode of admission Admission is not restricted. Students will be directly admitted if the admission requirements are met in full.
