Teaching and Administrative Experience

Teaching: Indonesian and a fairly wide range of courses on Indonesian/Malay linguistics, covering most of the major subfields of the discipline, including dialectology, socio-linguistics, historical linguistics, morphology and syntax; Indonesian history and literature.

Administration: 1987-1988, 1992-1994, dean of the Fachbereich Ost- und Außereuropäische Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaften, University Frankfurt.


Other Activities

Since 1985 more than twenty-five MA and PhD students from Indonesia (sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service) have visited the Institute of Southeast-Asian Studies at Frankfurt for a period of three to four months in order to work with me on their theses. Two members of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei Darussalam visited my Institute for three months in order to compile a Tutong (regional language of Brunei) dictionary.

Since 1981 the following scholars have visited Frankfurt on grants awarded to the Institute by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) or the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft: Dr. Soepomo Poedjosoedarmo, Yogyakarta (one year), Dr. Harimurti Kridalaksana, Jakarta (twice: one year and three months), Dr. Alexander Adelaar, Leiden and Canberra, now Melbourne (twice: two years), Dr. Malcolm Ross, ANU (twice: eight months), Prof. Andrew Pawley, ANU (three months), Prof. James Collins, Hawaii (twice: seven months), Peter Austin, Melbourne, (three months).

From 1985 until 1988 the Volkswagen Foundation sponsored a student exchange-program between the Institute and the Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Andalas, Padang.

Prof. Anton Moeliono (former head of the Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa, Jakarta) was awarded a professorship at Frankfurt University from October 1990 to February 1991 while I was a visiting professor in Yogyakarta (see above).

From 1984 until 1993 and from 1998 until 2007: member of the selection committee of the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), Bonn.

since 2002: advisory function at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (compilation of Malay etymologies for the new Kamus Dewan, member of MABM and participant in MABM conferences, teaching of upgrading courses in fieldwork and linguistic analysis at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia).

Research Interests and Projects

Main Research Interests

Synchronic and diachronic research on Austronesian languages, since the 1970s: work on western Austronesian dialect and comparative studies (especially Malay, Sundanese and Javanese), since the 1980s: research on the languages spoken on the islands west of Sumatra (Mentawai, Enggano) and on the history of Malay as well as on Malay dialects (especially Bangka, Belitung and western Borneo), since 1998: work on Sasak (language spoken on Lombok) and its speech levels.

Fieldwork

1971-1972, 1976, 1979 21 months in west and central Java, collecting data on Jakarta Malay, Sundanese and Javanese dialects in 170 villages. Funded by National Science Foundation and German Research Foundation.
1982 and 1984 six weeks in a Sakaliow longhouse on Siberut, Mentawai Islands. Partially funded by Volkswagen Foundation.
1987 six weeks in Brunei conducting linguistic surveys on its seven regional languages. Funded by Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
in 1986 interviews with a native speaker of Enggano who spent three months in Padang (West Sumatra). Funded by German Academic Exchange Service.
1993-1995 one month on the island of Bangka, collecting data on Malay dialects
1996-97 one month in western Borneo

Special Honors

December 2006: I was awarded the following festschrift: Schulze, Fritz; Warnk, Holger (Ed.) 2006. Insular Southeast Asia. Linguistic and Cultural Studies in Honour of Bernd Nothofer. Wiesbaden.
