Admission


Required are 

a)     A Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, political science, economics, business administration, law or related areas, or a Bachelor’s Degree in cultural studies with focus on China, Japan, Korea or South East Asia. Applicants with a bachelor's degree from China, Vietnam or Mongolia have to provide an APS certificate at the time of their application.
b)     TOEFL test result of at least 560 (paper), 220 (computer based) or 84 (internet based), or equivalent results from other officially acknowledged tests of English capability, such as IELTS or the Cambridge Proficiency examination.

If your BA has been taught in English throughout, no separate English proficiency certificate is required.

c)     Special eligibility, demonstrated by:
  • a convincing motivation letter and CV;
  • at least one positive letter of recommendation, stating why the candidate is considered suitable for the Master Program in Modern East Asian studies (MEAS);
  • a research proposal (3 - 5 pages) on a topic related to the regions and disciplines covered by the MEAS program. The research proposal shall demonstrate the ability to identify a current socio-scientific topic, to highlight its importance within a broader context and to develop convincing hypotheses. Applicants shall furthermore demonstrate their ability to structure their ideas in an academically sound manner and to use correct terminology.

Only complete applications will be considered. Admission depends on the final BA grade (60%) and on the research proposal (40%).


Application process

Applications are made through the central online system for Master programs of Goethe University in cooperation with Uni assist e.V. All applications for the M.A. MEAS programme will be processed through this system (http://www.uni-assist.de/online-application.html).

An online application offers you the opportunity to apply in a paperless way via the central online portal for master degree programs. Using the upload function, you can submit all of the required documents (such as the CV and education certificates) electronically, and assign them to the respective application. Please note: The application system Uni assist will require you to send some of your documents as certified hard copies. These documents are due to arrive at the day of the respective deadline. 

Applicants with international degrees have to send their documents by post to Uni assist e.V. additionally in order to have the application process successfully completed. Please note: These documents are due to arrive at the day of the respective deadline.

Application Deadlines
First round deadline:      March 15 (prior to the winter semester of intended enrolment)

Second round deadline:  July 15 (prior to the winter semester of intended enrolment)
(for Non-EU citizens)

Final deadline:               August 15 (prior to the winter semester of intended enrolment)
(for EU citizens)

We encourage students who have to apply for visa to submit their application
before July 15.

Goethe University Frankfurt does not charge tuition fees but only a moderate semester fee of 362,75 Euros which includes the "Semesterticket". This ticket provides for unlimited travel on public transportation within the whole Rhein-Main region.
