Groundwater modeling

Groundwater flow and transport modeling

I applied a two-dimensional groundwater flow and transport model to simulate the transport of dissolved chlorinated hydrocarbons in the subsurface of an industrial area of Hamburg and to find the optimal locations and pumping regimes for aquifer remediation. Besides, I developed a computer program for automatically calibrating the groundwater flow model.

To optimize the management of an abandoned waste disposal site (Hamburg-Georgswerder) with high amounts of aromatic and chlorinated organic compounds, I modeled solute transport in the natural clay liner and the aquifer. A variety of lab and field experiments were conducted to estimate the (scale-dependent) hydraulic conductivity of the natural clay liner.
