Scientific interests

My scientific interest span a wide range of topics related to atmospheric research. The basis of my research are experimental studies of the chemical composition of the atmosphere. I began my career with stratospheric research, more specifically the input of sulphur into the stratosphere. Later this expanded to the input and distribution of halogens into the stratosphere, including questions related to the chemistry of halogens in the stratosphere. More recently, I have become more interested in tropospheric research, in the tropopause region and in questions regarding the coupling of climate change and stratospheric ozone.

My current research projects include

  • instrument development (in-situ GC/MS) for measurement of atmospheric trace species on board the new German research aircraft HALO,

  • atmospheric monitoring (co-ordinator of EU project Eurohydros on molecular Hydrogen in the atmosphere),

  • the chemistry and physics of the upper troposphere/ lower stratosphere (UT/LS) region (coordinator of the projects SPURT and TACTS, the latter being the first mission of the new research aircraft HALO in this region) and

  • the coupling between global change and stratospheric processes (Nature Geoscience paper on long term trends of mean age of stratospheric air; participation in DFG research group SHARP)

  • the validation of stratospheric observations by satellite sensors, in particular on Envisat.
