Romance Linguistics (Master of Arts)

Conditions of admission

Course content and focus areas

The two-year Master’s degree programme in Romance Linguistics is oriented towards students who wish to deepen their knowledge in the area of the linguistics of the Romanic languages.

In doing so this Master’s programme offers a particularly comprehensive perspective of the Romanic languages, since all linguistic core topics (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics) are handled. It also places particular emphasis on applied areas of linguistics. This encompasses phenomena of language variation in Romania, the single and multi-lingual initial and second-language acquisition, aspects of language mutation, language contact, multilingualism and loss of language.

In a particularly powerful way this Master’s programme allows one to obtain an insight into current linguistic research since the lecturers not only bring in current theoretical questions but also empirical methods for collection and evaluation of data in their teaching. There is also the possibility, as part of the Master’s programme, for active participation of students on current research projects.

The Master’s degree programme in “Romance Linguistics” also offers deepening and broadening of knowledge of the languages French (FR), Spanish (SP), Italian (IT) and Portuguese (PT), whereby the students select two of the above-mentioned languages as their areas of focus at the beginning of their Master’s degree programme.

In this way the Master’s degree programme in “Romance Linguistics” prepares the student to take a doctorate in the area of linguistics and to take up a scientific career, but also for demanding professional activities (for example as a lecturer, editor or adviser) in the area of journalism, publishing, science management etc. where a knowledge of foreign languages is required at a high level and it is decidedly a matter of understanding scientific research results, to present them adequately, to mediate them and also to critically review them.
