 Overview

Course content and focus areas

The Master’s degree programme in Islamic Studies sees itself as an Islam-related discipline which connects Islamic theology with general humanities, cultural and social sciences disciplines.

The goal of the research-oriented Master’s degree programme in Islamic Studies is to enable the student to undertake independent, self-sufficient research at an advanced level. The Master’s degree programme provides deepened scientific knowledge in the field of Islamic Studies in all of its variety and complexity as well the abilities to work self-sufficiently according to basic scientific principles and to use scientific methods and insights as well as to  rationally reflect upon the beliefs. It provides, in detail, deeper insights into the paradigmatic, theoretical and methodical bases of the subject and exemplary problems in the areas of Koran exegesis (tafsīr), systematic theology
(kalām), the culture, society and history of Islam (tarīḫ alislām) as well as a history of ideas (falsafa: philosophy, tasṣawwuf: mysticism, piety, aḫlāq: ethics). There is furthermore the opportunity given for specialised concentration on certain topic areas and for gathering of and systematic reflection on practical experiences as well for deepening the language basics of the subject.

The graduates acquire expanded competencies for later activities in academic, socio-political, cultural and religious areas.

Apart from scientific young talents in university teaching and research, the Master’s degree programme in Islamic Studies also educates theologians as well as scientific specialists in the Islamic religion. The Master’s degree programme also serves as preparation for subsequent doctoral studies.

Within the second year of study a semester can be spent at a cooperating foreign university so that students can become familiar from an internal perspective with the latest developments in the Islamic-theological scientific landscape there and are, in this way, proficient to undertake innovative scientific research in the respective foreign language.
