Research Highlights

Subtype Specificity in Human Peptide GPCRs by DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR 

GPCRs are the most important signal transducers in higher eukaryotes. In this study, groups from the MPI of Biophysics, Vanderbilt University and Goethe University Frankfurt have used DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR integrated with advanced molecular modeling and biochemical methods to resolve the mechanism of the subtype selectivity of human bradykinin receptors for their peptide agonists. The detailed molecular picture obtained by this approach opens a new gateway for exploring the complex conformational and chemical space of peptides and peptide analogs for designing GPCR subtype-selective biochemical tools and drugs.

Research Highlights


Successful Joint Sino-German Research Funding Applications by two PIs of the Department

Matthias Wagner, Inorganic Chemistry, and Clemens Glaubitz, Biophysical Chemistry, succeeded in a highly competitive bilateral funding initiative by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

The Glaubitz lab will collaborate with Prof. Xiao He at the East China Normal University, Shanghai. The aim of the project is to link high-end solid-state NMR experiments with novel quantum chemical 

computations and MD simulations in order to link structural, functional and optical properties of membrane-bound photoreceptors.

The Wagner lab is concerned with the development of boron-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as next-generation materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaic devices. The research will be conducted jointly with Profs. Todd Marder (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg), Suning Wang (Beijing Institute of Technology), and Jun Liu (Chinese Academy of Science, Changchun).

The Faculty

In the faculty of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy, 33 professors are involved in research and teaching. They are supported by 440 permanent members of staff and teach more than 2.000 undergraduate and 500 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in three different disciplines: Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biochemistry.
