Tolerance and Intolerance in the Dialogues Between Conflicting Jewish Positions in the 20th Century

Research project of Dr. Roi Benbassat

The aim of the project is to formulate the religious and philosophical principles that underlie the dialogues as well as the ongoing problems of religious intolerance between Jewish positions in the 20th century. These religious, moral, cultural and philosophical debates take place on the background of crucial historical developments, notably the world wars and the establishment of the state of Israel, which demand a significant and urgent reconsideration of the status of the Jewish religion within modern society, and in the newly forming Israeli society in particular. Formulating the concurrent Jewish conceptions and investigating their interrelations as well as their reactions to modern secular worldviews and values would form the groundwork necessary for a valuable discussion of the problems of religious intolerance in this specific context and beyond it.
