Major research at the Department 14
Magnetic Resonance:

Structure and dynamics of Biomacromulecules

Development of new methods in the area of MNR/EPR/MS, laser spectroscopy and computerbased modelling.
The research groups are involved in the SFB of the department "Transport and Communication across Biological Membranes", in EU projects and in several industrial cooperations. They are collaborating with the other research interests within and outside the department
Molecular mechanisms of drugs:

Fundamental and methodological research: synthesis, analytics, targeting

Mechanism of drug interactions and biomedical research: gelanics, pharmacology, molecular medizine.
Substantial collaborative research projects are the graduate programmes Biologicals and, the graduate school FIRST and the "LOEWE-Research Center Lipid Signaling (LiFF)"
Membrane Proteomics:

Structure and function of membrane proteins

Cellular interactions of membrane proteins
A substantial collaborative research projecs in this research focus is the SFB "Transport and Communication across Biological Membranes". There are several cooperations with groups in the areas biology, physics, medicine and with researchers from the MPI of biophysics and brain research.
New materials: From molecules to materials:

Synthesis of new specialized materials with exceptional magnetic, optic and electronic characteristics

Structural and element specific analytics of new materials
Substantial collaborative research projects are the Transregio-SFB "Condensed Matter Systems with Variable Many-Body Interactions" and the joint research project NanoBiC, in cooperation with the department of Physics.
Didactics in Chemistry:

Development of modern contepts and the use of new media in chemical education

Investigation and problem solving concerning further training for teachers
A centre of live-long education for teachers in chemistry (Lehrerfortbildungszentrum Chemie) is situated at the institute. More than 800 teachers participate in the programm every year and it is also involved in the Centre for education for teachers of the University . The Institut was leading in establishing the Goethe-Scholar-Lab for Chemistry and Physics, an out-of-school learning location for scholars.
