Department 14: Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy
In the department of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy, 38 professors are involved in research and teaching. They are supported by 215 permanent members of staff and are involved in teaching for more than 1500 undergraduate and 500 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in four different subjects: Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Food Chemistry.
The department is located at the Campus Riedberg of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in the North of Frankfurt, in direct neighbourhood to the departments of Biological Science, Physics, Geosciences, and the Max-Planck-Institute for biophysics. Presently, the new building for the department of Biology and a building for the Cluster of Excellence Frankfurt Macromolecular Complexes is under construction. It should be completed till 2010.
In addition, a biotechnology incubator, the Frankfurt Centre for Innovation (FIZ) supports the knowledge transfer between fundamental research and new business. Part of the research in the department is organized in interdisciplinary research centres such as the BMRZ, the CMP, the CSC and ZAFES. Members of the department participate in three programme grants (SFB) and one research group. In addition, two graduate programmes and two graduate schools support the education for PhD students.
The department disposes of a Degussa Endowed Professorship, a Lichtenberg Professorship, a Beilstein Professorship, a Heisenberg Professorship and a Professorship founded by the City Solar AG.
Regarding the Cluster of Excellence Frankfurt Macromolecular Complexes, the department is significantly involved: three of the CEF-investigators (Prof. Fucini, Prof. Heckel and Prof. Pos), eight of the principal investigators and two of the adjunct investigators belong to our department.
A principal investigator is also involved in the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System.
