The
research-oriented Master’s programme in International
Studies/Peace and Conflict Studies is offered jointly by Goethe
Universität Frankfurt and Technische Universität
Darmstadt in co-operation with the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt.
The study programme takes a socio-scientific approach and offers
theoretical and normative knowledge at the junction between peace and
conflict research, international relations, political theory and
philosophy, and applies this knowledge to the current problems of
regional and global order.
Students are made familiar with theoretically based and normatively
founded perspectives on national, trans-national and global
socialisation processes and acquire the ability to undertake a
differentiated analysis of conflicts within and between states, as well
as a considered development of strategies to settle conflicts and
promote peace. Students take part in a research placement where they
will carry out the research themselves. They can learn to apply their
theoretical and methodological skills to an analysis of real
”cases”
The interdisciplinary study programme’s focus is on political
science, especially international relations. In addition to political
science and its different focus areas, the master’s programme
includes sociology and philosophy in addition to compulsory optional
subjects such as law and economics, engineering sciences or natural
sciences. These subjects are not subsidiary subjects in the
conventional sense, but integrated into the master’s
programme via certain problem fields and subject areas. This promotes
intensive handling with, but also between, different theoretical and
methodical practical approaches.
In addition to specialist knowledge, the study programme also promotes
students’ key skills. In order to develop team spirit, the
students create content in working groups in seminars and present this
information jointly. Different forms of learning, such as the staging
of panel discussions or the simulation of negotiations, also teach
presentation techniques.
