My exploratory focus is the chemical characterization of aerosol particles smaller than 100 nm (ultrafine particles). Several sources like airports can lead to the emission of ultrafine particles which feature mostly high number concentrations but in contrary are of very low mass. As the mass is the limiting factor of the chemical analysis, the emphasis is on method development and the use of various sensitive measurement techniques like liquid chromatography coupled with ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC/HRMS). The chemical characterization of ultrafine particles is of importance as possible health effects regarding their exposure are still scarcely investigated and mitigation strategies can only be effective if the sources can be identified.

Furthermore I am interested in chemical transformation processes of biogenic marker compounds in the atmosphere leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosol. Therefore the analysis of air samples and the synthesis of organic transformation products for the chemical identification and quantification is another object of research.
