BA Program

The Bachelor's program provides basic subject knowledge in Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology. The discipline of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology combines the research and teaching programs established internationally under the names of Social or Cultural Anthropology with European Ethnology, which emerged as a relatively recent development in the German-speaking world as the successor discipline to Ethnology.

The development, maintenance and change of human life are the subjects of knowledge of the discipline. Contemporary cultures are exposed to demands of considerable adaptation and change. Culture, in its most general sense, means the ability shared by all people to engage productively and meaningfully with the social world as well as with the "natural" environment. This is exemplified in the study program by research results on the globalization of the economy, migration processes and other forms of mobility, urban development, European everyday cultures, knowledge development and the genesis of technology, as well as digital media and networks.

In the Bachelor's program, basic concepts and instruments of the subject are taught. This is done in exemplary fields and on the basis of current research results and case studies. In particular, students are enabled to collect data using empirical methods, to evaluate and present them. The three-semester apprenticeship research project in the major follows the maxim of inquiry-based learning and enables students to develop, test and verify these skills on a concrete object.
