Additional Funding Opportunities

How can I finance my studies?

A scholarship can provide financial support for your education or further studies, regardless of the stage you are at in your academic journey. Scholarships are available to various students, including pupils, undergraduate students, and doctoral candidates. Whatever your financial need, talent, field of study, or background, there is good chance you'll be able to find a suitable scholarship.

Foundations are the primary providers of scholarships, with many different foundations offering various opportunities. These foundations, which may be affiliated with political parties, labor unions, churches, social causes, or companies, have their own selection criteria based on their specific focus. For instance, athletic performance, artistic talent, political involvement, financial need, or religious affiliation may weigh into their decision. Social engagement and academic achievements of applicants, as well as their chosen field of study and institution, can also play a significant role in the selection process.

Parental support

Parental support is regulated by law and basically obliges parents to financially support their adult children in their education. The amount is calculated according to the parents' financial means, among other things, and is based on the so-called Düsseldorfer Tabelle.

More information on the legal situation is available from the Verband der Studentenwerke (association for student affairs).

Child benefit and BAföG

Students under the age of 25 are eligible to receive child benefit payments. Additionally, students have the option to apply for BAföG, a state-funded financial aid program. The maximum monthly rate for BAföG is €853, and it must repaid at a pro-rated amount after graduation.

The Amt für Ausbildungsförderung (office of educational support) of Studentenwerk Frankfurt am Main is available during office hours to provide guidance and information on BAföG.

You can find the contact details and office hours on the website of Studentenwerk Frankfurt am Main.

Education loans

For students in the advanced stages of their studies, educational loans serve as another financing option. These loans allow for a monthly amount of up to €300, which can be utilized for a maximum duration of 24 months and is required to be repaid afterward. Detailed information can be found on the website of the Goethe University Studentenwerk or from the respective lenders, such as KfW.

Part-time jobs

Many students rely on part-time jobs as a source of income. However, it is important to adhere to earnings and hourly limits in order to maintain student status, such as a maximum of 20 working hours per week. The Studentenwerks Frankfurt am Main offers a job exchange specifically for part-time jobs, which can be found on their website.

For comprehensive information and tips on financing your studies, the guidebook "Clever studieren - mit der richtigen Finanzierung" ("Study smart - with the right financing") published by Stiftung Warentest and Verbraucherzentrale NRW provides valuable insights and advice.

Students who are pursuing a first or further university degree leading to a professional qualification have the opportunity to work part-time as student assistants. Student assistants provide valuable services in research and teaching, such as offering tutorials and assisting in various tasks. Goethe University frequently publishes job advertisements specifically for student assistant positions. You can find the current job postings on the university's website
