Internal University Procedure

Please note: The application deadlines vary for programs with restricted and unrestricted admissions. You can find these deadlines here.

You can simultaneously apply for up to three admission-restricted programs, irrespective of whether you're using the DoSV procedure or the Goethe University application portal. Goethe University's application process is primarily electronic, meaning you generally don't need to submit hard copies of your application documents, with few exceptions (refer to step 3 of the procedure timeline below).

To apply for an additional program within the deadline, you can easily add it through the application portal. But, if you've already chosen three programs and want to substitute one, you'll first need to withdraw one of your existing preferences in the portal before submitting a new one. Be careful: Once you remove a preference, you can't restore it!

For first-semester applications in courses like Biosciences (B.Sc.), Bioinformatics (B.Sc.), Biochemistry (B.Sc.),  Biosciences (B.Sc.), Bioinformatics (B.Sc.), Biochemistry (B.Sc.), Educational Science (B.A.), Linguistics (B.A.), Psychology (B.Sc.), Law (StEx), Sports Science (B.A.), Business and Economics Education (B.Sc.) ), and Economics and Business Administration (B.Sc.), the application is exclusively through the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV). If you're considering a subject change or a double degree in these fields, you'll also need to follow this procedure, and additional registration at hochschulstart.de is essential. More details can be found on our: DoSV.

Applications for first-semester Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy are exclusively via hochschulstart.de within the the scope of DoSV. Further details can be found on our DoSV homepage.

If you're seeking recognition of previously assessed achievements for Bachelor's programs in areas like Economics and Business Administration or Business and Economics Education, you must apply as a higher semester applicant. Ensure you submit all required documents within the deadline as outlined here. For details on the credit recognition process for specific Bachelor's programs, which is conducted after the application deadline, please click here.

For subject changes or double degree applications, kindly consult the dedicated section on our website: Change of Subject/Double Degree.

Would you like to apply for a Bachelor's or teacher training program with us? Here is the timeline for your application at Goethe University.

Log in to the application portal

As part of the registration process, you will first need to verify your valid e-mail address and then receive an account with a username and password. Please note the information regarding difficulties with certain e-mail providers.

You may initially select multiple programs. Once you have made your selections, the applications will be set to "in process" status. After making your final selections, you may submit up to three applications online for admission-restricted programs. The status of each submitted application will change to "submitted online" and then to "valid" after confirmation by GU. Only applications with the status "valid" will be considered in the admissions process (see step 4).

Please pay close attention to the information you provide in your application. This will determine which documents you must send to the Registrar's Office by regular mail if you are admitted.

If you are applying to a fully unrestricted program, you can complete the online enrollment process (step 5) immediately after submitting your application. Finally, you will need to send the enrollment application with the required documents by regular mail to the Registrar's Office and pay the semester fee to complete your enrollment. If all required documents and payments have been received by the deadline, you will proceed to step 6.

For the minor subjects of Economics and Business Administration, only the 1st semester is subject to admission restrictions. If you are admitted to the first semester, it is not possible to have your previously passed exams recognized.

If you have already earned credit, you can apply for a higher semester without admission restrictions. Please submit the necessary documentation with your application. Information about this can be found here. Please also see the information on applying for a higher semester.

If you are applying for a program with restricted admission, you do not need to send any application documents (not even an FSJ [voluntary service] certificate) to Goethe University, unless one of the following special cases applies. Only in these cases do you need to send the relevant certificate and the application form from the application portal to the university by regular mail:

  • Second degree: Copy of the first degree certificate and a written statement of purpose
  • Hardship case: Proof of the hardship case submitted
  • Compensation for disadvantages: School transcript or equivalent evidence
  • Preferential admission: certificate of service (Dienstzeitbescheinigung) and copy of previous admission letter

If you have submitted a special application, but no documents have been received by the Registrar's Office, your application will not be considered.

Important: The selection of the subject "wie bisher" (as previously) or "Bildungswissenschaften wie bisher“ (education studies as previously) only applies to students who are already enrolled in the desired degree program at Goethe University. If you wish to change to another teaching profession (e.g. if you wish to change from L2 to L3), you may not select the subject "wie bisher."

Check the application portal regularly for the current status of your application.

You can indicate in the application portal that you would like to be notified by e-mail if the status of your application changes. You can also use the portal to check if an admissions decision has been made and if you have been admitted to your desired program. You can then enroll directly through the portal using online enrollment (see Step 5).

If your application has been rejected, you will receive a rejection letter by regular mail at the end of the admissions process.

In case of an admission, the acceptance of the study place takes place exclusively via the application portal. The button "Online-Immatrikulation (Online enrollment) triggers the enrollment dialog, which must be completed with the appropriate information. You will also need to upload a photo for your Goethe Card (student ID + semester ticket) - the Goethe Card cannot be created without uploading a photo.

If you have applied for a combined degree program (teacher training or bachelor's degree with a minor) and have only been admitted to one of the desired subjects, you will have to select an alternative, unrestricted subject for enrollment. You can do this in the application portal by clicking on the button "Alternative Fachkombination prüfen" (Check alternative subject combination). Once you have selected an alternative subject, you must complete the online enrollment and send the enrollment form to the Registrar's Office. Attention: When selecting the subject, you must indicate the subject for which you have already been admitted!

After the online enrollment, the enrollment application (now available in the portal) with the documents listed in it must be sent by regular mail to the Registrar's Office by the deadline indicated in the application. At the same time, the semester fee must be paid; the amount and purpose of the fee are listed in the enrollment application under point 1.

Important note for early high-school graduates

Please note: Your university entrance qualification (HZB) must be available by the end of the application period (Jan. 15th or July 15th for subjects with restricted admission, Feb. 28th or Aug. 31st for subjects with unrestricted admission), otherwise it is unfortunately not possible to apply to Goethe University. A preliminary overview of grades is not sufficient, nor can the HZB be submitted at a later date.

If you receive your school-leaving certificate after the application deadline, you can only apply to the Goethe University in the next application round.
