Change of Subject and Double Degree Program

The application process takes place online using your student account.

Exceptions:

  • Study programs run through the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (SfH - formerly ZVS)
  • Study programs run via the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV)

Deadlines:

Open-admission programs/subjects

  • from June 1 to August 31 for the winter semester
  • from December 1 to February 28 for the summer semester

Restricted-admission degree programs

  • from June 1 to July 15 for the winter semester
  • from December 1 to January 15 for the summer semester

Please note:

  • ZV (central procedure) subjects: For the ZV degree programs Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, the application is made exclusively via hochschulstart.de (see below).
  • For other courses of study, which are offered within the DoSV, you have to register at hochschulstart.de (see below).
  • An application for a change of subject or a double degree does not exempt you from the existing re-registration deadlines, in particular the payment of the semester fee or the late payment fee!

Procedure

To apply for a change of major/double degree, you must first apply online through the website by the deadline: Go to the application porta

(Please note that an application is only possible during the respective application period).

In the application portal, first log in with your student account (HRZ username and HRZ password) and select the item "Application" in the tab "Course offerings".

Now you can add an application. The system will guide you step-by-step through the online application process. Please enter your former matriculation number in the step Matriculation number so that your application can be processed correctly.

If you only want to change your major or minor in a multiple degree program, please enter "as before" for the major or minor you are still taking. The same applies to applications for a teaching degree if you only want to change your teaching subjects.

If you have chosen an open subject or an open degree program, you can now print out the application for enrollment directly from the main screen and send it to the Registrar's Office by regular mail.

Please note: At this time, the re-registration must have already taken place, otherwise you cannot be re-registered!

In general, you do not need to send any application documents to Goethe University for a subject or program with restricted admission.

Exceptions to this are the bachelor's degree programs in Business Administration and Economics or Business Education: If you wish to have previously evaluated achievements recognized for the bachelor's programs in Business Administration and Economics or Business Education, you must apply for a higher subject-related semester. In this case, please submit all required documents by the application deadline as described here.

For information on the recognition of academic achievements for the bachelor's programs in Business Administration and Economics or Business Education, which will be evaluated after the application deadline, please click here.

Exception for special applications: in this case, you have to send the supporting documents and the application form uploaded in the application portal by regular mail to the Registrar's Office:

  • Second degree: copy of first degree transcript and written justification
  • Hardship case: proof of the submitted hardship claim
  • Compensation for disadvantages: school reports or corresponding evidence
  • Preferential admission: employment certificate and copy of previous admission letter

If you have submitted a special application but no documents have been received by the Registrar's Office, your application will not be considered or, in the case of an application for a second degree, you will be included in the admission procedure with the lowest ranking.

Admission

If you receive a notification of acceptance to an admissions-restricted degree program, please register again in the portal and accept your study place. To do this, go through the online enrollment and then send the enrollment application listed on the main screen to the Registrar's Office. Please note the documents that may still be required, which are listed in the application for enrollment.

Important: Your re-registration must have taken place by this date, otherwise you will not be able to enroll in the new/additional subject.

If you have applied for a combined degree program (e.g. bachelor, major + minor) and have only been admitted to one of the two subjects, you must first enter an alternative open-admission subject in the portal. Otherwise, you will not be able to re-register. This is done via the button "Alternative Fachkombination prüfen" (Check alternative subject combination). In the subsequent steps, you can then select an alternative open-admission subject so that the online enrollment can then be completed and the application for enrollment can be sent to the Registrar's Office.

Please note: When specifying the subject, you must also indicate the subject for which you have already been admitted.

ZV (central procedure) degree programs

If you would like to change to the first semester in the study programs Medicine, Dentistry, or Pharmacy, please apply via hochschulstart.de, since these applications are not handled by the university.
