Tonio Weicker ist seit Januar 2023 als Projektkoordinator im BMBF-Projekt „Transform-R -Die Gestaltung der Energie- und Mobilitätswende als sozial-ökologische Transformation in der Region FrankfurtRheinMain“ im Team der AG Mobilitätsforschung. Er hat im Jahr 2019 zu stadtgesellschaftlichen Konflikten anlässlich vorangetriebener ÖPNV-Reformen in den südrussischen Städten Wolgograd und Rostow am Don an der TU Berlin promoviert. Von 2019-2022 war Tonio Weicker im EU-HERA-Forschungsprojekt „Public transport as public space in European Cities“ [PUTSPACE – Public Transport as Public Space in European Cities: Narrating, Experiencing, Contesting] am Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde in der Forschungsgruppe Mobilität und Migration tätig. In seiner Forschungsarbeit beschäftigt er sich u.a. mit normativen Setzungen des Raumes in zeitgenössischer Verkehrspolitik und argumentiert in Anbetracht marginalisierter Perspektiven für eine sozio-räumlich ausdifferenzierte Mobilitätswende.
