02.12.2023 Visit to the Steinau Christmas Market

On December 2nd, 2023, Goethe Welcome Center invited our international researchers on a trip to the Steinau Christmas Market. Despite the cold weather, we enjoyed Steinau's picturesque scenery, as well as the festive atmosphere. Must say: Learning about the Brothers Grimm (who spent part of their youth in Steinau) while sipping some mulled wine ain't too bad! Thank you for joining us on this trip - and hope to see you again next time!

18.11.2023 City Tour of Frankfurt

On our city tour on Saturday, November 18th, 2023, we toured the most important spots of Frankfurt and made the most of the good weather. Aside from getting an overview of the old town and downtown area, we also got a crash course on Frankfurt’s rich history in only three hours. Did you know, for instance, that our city’s name is a compound of ‘Franconian’ and ‘ford’? Or that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt? - We learned a lot, and we shared some laughs, too. Thanks for joining us today!

On Saturday, November 4th 2023 we had an amazing and enlightening guided tour through the current exhibition "WEIMAR WEIBLICH" - Women and Gender Diversity in Weimar Cinema (1918 – 1933) at the famous Frankfurt Filmmuseum. The group enjoyed the visit and we spent a pleasant Saturday afternoon together.

28.07.2023 Summer Garden Party for International Researchers

On Friday, 28th July 2023, the Goethe Welcome Centre together with the foundation „Stiftung zur Förderung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen“ invited all international researchers at Goethe University to the great annual Summer Garden Party in the garden of GU's guesthouse Ditmarstraße 4. Despite the rain, about 60 members of GU's international community gathered to celebrate the end of the summer term 2023 together with their family members, some of their academic hosts and participants of the GWC host programme. Dr. Johannes Müller (above on the picture), head of Global Office welcomed our guests with a great opening speech. A delicious potluck buffet of national dishes prepared by participants and live music by the Frankfurter Jazz-Trio „Walter Bareithers Trio Mediterraneo“ created a delightful atmosphere and made this event such a great success.

01.07.2023 Excursion to Wiesbaden

On Saturday the first of July we visited the imperial State Capital of Hessen. We began the day with a guided tour through Wiesbaden's rich history, exploring its significant landmarks. One of the highlights of our tour was the Landtag, Hessen's center of political decision-making. We had the opportunity to learn about the current parties represented there and gain insights into their policy-making processes.

After an enjoyable and satisfying lunch, we concluded our trip by visiting the renowned Kochbrunnen (Boil Fountain) in Wiesbaden. This famous sodium chloride hot spring was a fascinating sight to behold. Additionally, we made a meaningful visit to the Gedenkstätte für die ermordeten Wiesbadener Juden, paying our respects to the memorial dedicated to the murdered Jewish community in Wiesbaden.

Overall, it was a fulfilling day filled with enriching experiences and a deeper understanding of Wiesbaden's history and cultural significance.

7.06.2023, Visit to the Opel Zoo

On Saturday June 17th, we went to the beautiful Opel Zoo. It was a very hot and sunny day but fortunately the forest in which the zoo is located provided us shade and cool places to rest. Everyone had fun watching the elephants bathe in the mud or the monkeys jump from tree to tree. It was a playful and pleasant atmosphere for the researchers' families and we all spent a beautiful saturday.

24.01.2023, New Year's Reception for International Researchers

After an interruption of two years caused by the global COVID pandemic, the Goethe Welcome Centre (GWC) and the “Stiftung zur Förderung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität" foundation January 24, 2023, invited the community of international researchers at Goethe University to their traditional New Year's Reception at the guesthouse Frauenlobstraße.

After a champagne reception and words of welcome by foundation chairman Prof. Jürgen Bereiter-Hahn, Goethe University President Prof. Enrico Schleiff gave a vivid New Year's speech to the about 85 assembled guests. He extended special thanks to all researchers present for their important contributions and emphasized the central significance of internationalization to the development of our university.

Furthermore, he outlined his vision for Goethe University in 2030 to be an excellent international university, with both feet firmly planted in the digital age and still deeply rooted among Germany's leading research universities, mentioning the university's current efforts regarding the federal “Excellence Strategy".

Special mention was made of the approximately 400 newly arriving international researchers in 2022 and the great challenge the war against Ukraine poses to the international science community and Goethe University's commitment to refugee researchers from Ukraine. In addition, the ongoing troubles and delays experienced at the Foreigners' Registration Office in Frankfurt were addressed – a topic that caused visible agitation among the audience. Last but not least, the opening of the new International Guest House on Riedberg Campus was mentioned, as the result of an extraordinary cooperation between Goethe University's “Stiftung zur Förderung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen", and the Studierendenwerk.
