Course content and focus areas

The “International Master Audiovisual and Cinema Studies” programme of study offers a research-oriented in-depth study and serves to provide scientific further qualifications for graduates of film and media studies, philological, art and musicological and philosophical degree programmes in or outside of Germany.

The study course provides the student with profound knowledge about the history and theory of films and audiovisual media as well as competency to reflect upon current aesthetic questions, for competent analysis of texts and formats of audiovisual media, and for undertaking independent research (doctoral studies).

In close cooperation with the University of Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle, University Paris 10-La Défense, Universität Liège, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Mailand, Udine University, Birkbeck College – University of London, Ruhr-University Bochum, University Pompeu Fabra-Barcelona, Université Charles de Gaulle Lille 3, Université de Montréal, Università degli Studi Roma 3 and the University of Amsterdam, the Master's degree is awarded on the basis of a continuous two year (four semester) period of study as well as passing of the examinations designed according to the provisions of the study and examination regulations of the universities mentioned and these regulations.

Conditions of admission

Admission requirements
  • Bachlor's degree in Film and/or Media Studies or a related field of philology, art history or social sciences. 
  • If you didn't study your undergraduate degree in the field of
    "Theater-, Film- and Media Studies" at the Goethe-University:
    Transcript of Records and an
    extra page with the study-related courses (title of the course, CP and if possible the grade)
    Study related courses are courses in theory, aesthetics, history and analysis of film and media.
  • Proof of language skills in two foreign languages (at least niveau B2): English, French, Spanish, Italian, Catalan or Portuguese are to be proven by standardised tests or:
    English:
    - Test of Englisch as a foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet based at least 85 points
    - Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) 400-485 (listening), 385-450 (reading)
    - International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at least 6,0 points
    - Cambridge English Language Assessment: Cambridge First, Advanced oder Proficiency (at least 'Good' in every area).
    - native speaker
    French:
    - Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF), Kompetenzstufe B2
    Italian:
    - Certificazione di competenza di italiano come lingua straniera (CILS), at least niveau B2.
    Catalan:
    - Catalan Language Certificates (CLC), at least niveau B2
    Spanish:
    - Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE), at least Nivel intermedio
    Portugese:
    - Diploma Intermédio de Português Língua Estrangeira (DIPLE), at least Niveau B2, oder Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros (CELPE-BRAS), at least Intermediário Superior

    - or a highschool diploma in a country where the language is the official language
    - or high school diploma (A-levels diploma), or corresponding high school certificates and transcripts rated no lower than "adequate" (4.0), or certification of classes in english 5 years

    You have to submit the proof with your application.
  • Letter of motivation with an abstract for a deepening project, which clearifies the specific research interests of the applicant. The project will be further developed during the two-year study programme and prepare the final master thesis.
    The letter of motivation presents in particular the personal and specific interest in the Masters Course film culture, possibly with a description of previous professional or practical experience or relevant, even extra-curricular activities that can provide specific information on the ability for the Master's programme (maximum 700 words).

  • Applicants with an international university entrance qualification and Bachelor's degree must prove sufficient German language skills (DSH-1)
    The following certificates are being recognized as equivalents to the DSH-1 certificate:
    • TestDaF (German as a foreign language test): all results being at least at level TDN 3
    • KMK examination: German language diploma second class (DSD II) with level B2 throughout
    • Telc German C1 higher education: with a result of at least “sufficient”
Provisional admission

Provisional admission is possible on the basis of a current transcript of records (at least 80% of the required for the bachelor's degree CP - normally 144 credit points); the Bachelor’s thesis must be finished or almost finished and a letter of recommendation from the thesis advisor must be submitted as well as a certification of enrolment. Provisional admission is valid until the end of the first semester of the master’s program. The bachelor’s degree must thus be handed in by March 31 (winter intake) or September 30 (summer intake) the latest.
