Overview

Course content and focus areas  The focus of the Master’s programme is academic reflection on curating and art criticism as an intellectual and aesthetic challenge with a practice-oriented perspective. The aim of the programme is to bestow skills that link an object-related approach to theoretical knowledge and expertise. One of the major interests of the programme is to open up discussions on curating and art criticism that have so far been closely connected to contemporary art to previous eras and other cultural-science disciplines.
The exhibition and museum business of the 21sth century faces new tasks and challenges. The presentation of works of art and objects of cultural and historical significance has become a complex challenge in a global art world, but also as a result of developments within contemporary art, and it therefore needs to take art history as well as cultural, social, political and philosophical aspects into account. Museums and other art institutions have to reformulate their concept of the public sphere. Museums are increasingly having to model public discourses. This is true not only for institutions that are directly linked to contemporary art. The changes are in fact so fundamental that they also affect the organisation of classical art history, ethnological and historical collections.

The Master’s programme in Curatorial Studies – Theory – History – Criticism offers museum curators, exhibition planners and art critics a theoretical and practical basis for professional life. During their studies, students are already given the chance to link expertise to curating issues and practical knowledge. The Frankfurt study programme is characterised by a unique, nationwide co-operation between committed university institutes, outstanding museums and an internationally renowned art academy.

Conditions of admission

Admission requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable degree in art history, philosophy, ethnology, history, art pedagogics or archaeological sciences
  • The examination committee decides on admission to the programme. The applications documents must include the relevant records, a letter of motivation and a CV. The weighting given to the application documents is 55% for the grade of the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, 25% for the one-page letter of motivation and 20% for the CV. The resulting overall rating must be at least 9,0 points.
  • Admission to the programme requires knowledge of Latin (language test of the Institut für Klassische Philologie of Goethe-Universität, equivalent knowledge/examinations or three years of instruction in Latin) and knowledge of two other modern languages (one of which must be English or French). The language skills may be proven by:
    • a) university entrance qualification (e.g. A-Levels) or
    • b) secondary school records, with marks not less than ”inadequate (4.0)” or 5 points or
    • c) certificates of successfully completed language courses at German or foreign universities with at least 120 hours of language classes or 
    • d) expert reports or certificates of language skills acquired during study periods abroad, university language courses or in private studies or
    • e) certificates recognised as equal by the Institut für Klassiche Phililogie

  • Applicants with an international university entrance qualification and Bachelor's degree must prove sufficient German language skills (DSH-1)

Mode of admission

Admission is not restricted. Students will be directly admitted if the admission requirements are met in full (see above).
Small class size with a limited number of 12 to 15 participants enables an intensive research setting.

    a transcript of records or equivalent document listing the content of the study programme and average grade

  • if the first degree was obtained at an international higher education institution:
    certificate of German language skills (at least level DSH-1)
  • APS certificate for applicants from India, Vietnam and China (original)
