Overview

Course content and focus areas

The Master’s programme in Political Theory, created by Goethe Universität Frankfurt and Technische Universität Darmstadt, is the first degree of its kind in Germany. Students attend lectures at, and are tutored by, both universities, which also jointly award the academic degree. The Master’s programme in Political Theory teaches the theoretical knowledge and academic skills necessary for a comprehensive analysis of the current political situation and its dynamics. Thus ideas of justice, democracy and power are confronted by the world’s current problems, which are becoming increasingly complex. The course includes:
1.    an historical perspective, i.e. an historical, conceptual and critical reconstruction of systematically relevant theoretical approaches,
2.    a philosophical perspective, i.e. an analysis of terms and normative discussion of current political questions,
3.    a theoretical perspective of institutions, i.e. an empirically-based reflection about how legitimate political relations can be developed in complex societies,
Political theory is the focus of this interdisciplinary study programme. In addition to political science and its various branches, the programme includes philosophy, sociology, law and economics.
