Course content and focus areas

Mathematics is a major cultural science with a history dating back to ancient times. However, it is also the driving force behind many modern technologies and has become a key technology in the Information Era. This fact contradicts the public image of mathematics, which is often seen as a closed world of theorems and arithmetic formulae.  However, there are mathematical methods and processes behind issues and problems such as data compression and data safety, traffic control, the optimisation of financial instruments and non-destructive medical techniques. These processes give rise to a vivid science with many unsolved problems and an enormous impact on applications.
Studying mathematics is highly appealing and a great intellectual challenge. It can help you prepare for a career as a mathematician in business and industry and as a mathematics teacher.

Students on the Master of Science course build on the skills learned in the Bachelor’s programme by acquiring the following:

•    knowledge of the main mathematical disciplines, their methodological approaches and their interrelations,
•    an insight into up-to-date research results and the significance of these,
•    the ability to deal with a comprehensive mathematical task independently in a Master thesis,
•    the skills needed to work as a mathematical assistant or employee in an academic institution,
•    the basis for a PhD.
