Overview

Course content and focus areas

Contents and areas of focus:
The programme of study focusses on advanced training in the social and educational disciplines of sports, which are taught both theoretically and in a practice-oriented manner. This orientation makes this a unique programme of study for sports studies in German-speaking countries. The studies profile encompasses four core areas.

Reseach Orientation:
The program takes a research-oriented approach, teaching in-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods of empirical social research. This knowledge is directly applied in a research project as well as in the master's thesis.

Occupational field orientation:
The program offers the option of a professional field-specific specialization in the field of sports education, sports sociology or sports psychology. Experiences in possible areas of activity are gathered as part of a professional internship of at least 300 hours.

Sport practice:
The range of courses in the area of social science and methodological specialization is supplemented by an individually selectable range of sports courses.

Key qualifications:
In addition, the teaching of soft skills and freely selectable courses in the optional module prepare students for managerial activities, e.g. in science, organized sports or the education sector.

Structure of the study program:
The degree program comprises 120 CP and is divided into 10 modules. A detailed overview can be found here.

Qualification Profile:
The programme of study leads to the internationally recognized degree "Master of Arts". The degree certificate includes a "Diploma Supplement" that specifies the content and qualifications taught.

With the Master Social Sciences of Sport, you will have both a broad and deep understanding of sport as a significant cultural phenomenon. You will have excellent knowledge of methods of empirical social research and theories of sports education or sociology of sport or sports psychology. You are able to critically and constructively reflect on sports practice. You will also be very well qualified to take on a mediating and advisory capacity in organisations – also on topics other than sport.

Occupational fields:
Completion of the program opens up a wide range of career options. These include employment in sports clubs and sports associations, in sports administrations and sports editorial offices, activities as a commercial and freelance sports provider and sports consultant, as an expert for physical activity programs in all-day schools and, last but not least, as an employee at the university and in other research institutions.
