SMOS

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) remote sensing mission planned to be launched in September 2007 is part of the opportunity missions of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Earth Explorer programme. To inform the scientific community and the public about the current mission status as well as to promote the use of the SMOS data products within Germany a project office located at the Institute of Oceanography (IfM) of the University of Hamburg was established. The project office is supporting the mission by participating in calibration and validation studies for the SMOS instrument. Furthermore the project office will organize a series of workshops to develop user concepts for the SMOS data in cooperation with participating scientists. The hydrology group of the Institute of Physical Geography is supporting the German project office to:

  • develop user concepts for SMOS data
  • identify deficits of SMOS data products and to develop concepts to solve the problems
  • promote the use of the SMOS data products
  • establish a close connection to users in science and industry by acting as contact person for land applications of SMOS data.
