The Department of Physical Geography at Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, invites applications for the following position:

 

Post-Doc in Area Studies/Physical Geography (full time, E13)

 

for the topic of

 

African, Asian and International Actors in the Central African Mining Sector

Interdependencies and potentials for development in the field of tension between artisanal
and professional mining

 

The research project is part of the new program “AFRASO – Africa’s Asian Options: New Interactions between Africa and Asia” that is jointly organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre of East Asian Studies (ISO) and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Africa (ZIAF) at the Goethe-University (see www.ziaf.uni-frankfurt.de/PDF/AFRASO_Short-Version.pdf for further information). Pending final approval, the AFRASO research program will be funded by a special grant from the Federal Ministry of Higher Education and Research of Germany (see BMBF, http://www.bmbf.de/en/furtherance/16467.php ).

We expect an outstanding doctoral thesis with regional focus on Africa, methodically sound expertise on natural resources, mining, governance, transparency (e.g. EITI), and stake-holder dialogues evidenced by relevant publications, proficiency in French, English, and ideally German as well as the willingness in cooperative research within the AFRASO program. Several field trips to mining sites in Cameroon and the Central African Republic will require some field experience and intercultural sensitivity from the applicant.

The appointment is for four years, starting February 1st, 2013, pending final approval of the AFRASO program by the BMBF. The designated salary for the position is based on E13. Goethe-University is an equal opportunity employer which implies that applications from women are especially encouraged.
