Wissenschaftlicher Werdegang

1981–1983 Studium der Geographie (Diplom) mit den Nebenfächern Geologie, Bodenkunde und Botanik an der Justus-Liebig Universität Gießen, Vordiplom.
1983–1984 Sechsmonatiges Auslandspraktikum im GTZ/PNUD-Projekt zur ländlichen Regionalentwicklung in Togo, Westafrika.
1984–1986 Studium der Geographie (Diplom, Schwerpunkt Physische Geographie) mit den Nebenfächern Botanik und Tropische Land- und Forstwirtschaft an der Georg-August Universität Göttingen.
1986 Diplom in Physischer Geographie über „Saisonal überflutete Niederungen (bas-fonds) in Rumpfflächenregionen Zentral-Togos“.
1987–1989 DAAD Stipendiat und Doktorandenstipendium im Graduierten-Programm des Landes Niedersachsens; Geomorphologisch-agrarwissenschaftliche Feldforschungen in Westafrika.
1989 Promotion zum Dr. rer. nat. über „Reliefentwicklung, Morphodynamik und Landnutzung in den wechselfeuchten Tropen Westafrikas – Beispiele aus Togo“.
1990-1999 Wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Physische Geographie (H.K. Barth) an der Universität Paderborn.
2000 Habilitation und venia legendi für Physische Geographie an der Universität Paderborn mit einer Arbeit über „Landschaftsgenese und Paläoklima in Zentralafrika“.
2000 Professor für Geoökologie und Physische Geographie mit dem regionalen Schwerpunkt „Afrika südlich der Sahara“ an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.
