3D Terahertz Bildgebungssystem mit synthetischer Bildrekonstruktion

The activities in the project include the development of a fully electronic scanning 3D terahertz (THz) imaging system with a synthetic image reconstruction. The advantage of THz imaging systems is their penetration through many materials. This allows creating 3D images, similar to those with X-ray and ultrasound systems but without the drawbacks associated with these systems.

The work includes the development of algorithms and their implementation on parallel computing platforms for depth-resolved imaging. With low-resolution imaging is meant that the image forming system without focusing optics can focus on objects at different depths without the restriction of the optical system conventionally used otherwise. Furthermore, it is possible to perform the image reconstruction during the scanning operation

The advantage of the proposed image reconstruction is that a review of the image quality can be completed at any time. For long scans the regions of interest can be found by suitable focusing, and image areas can be analyzed already. Another important advantage is that the unique large bandwidth of the system for focusing purposes with synthetic imaging is used to detect objects with pronounced 3D contour and to focus on objects within different depths.
