Terrestial globe with world map which Caliph al-Mamûn (reigned 813–833 c.e.) commissioned a large group of astronomers and geographers to make.

Celestial globe by 'Abd al-Rahmân al-Sûfî (d. 986 c.e.), which disappeared early on and is here reconstructed according to the illustrations in his extant book onfixed-star astronomy.

One of the Arabic–Islamic astronomers who believed the Earth was rotating around it’s own axis was Abû Sa'i as-Sijzî (2nd half of the 10th century c.e.). Our model is meant to illustrate his concept of the Earth’s rotation.

Das umfassende Instrument von Hamid b. al-Hidr al-Hugandî (2. Hälfte des 10. Jh.s).

Theencompassing instrument invented by Hamid b. al-Hidr al-Hugandî (2nd half of the 10th C.E.). This instrument allows the measurement of the longitudes of the planets.

(2. Instrument aus dem Buch der Istanbuler Sternwarte)

Mural Quadrant for determining the daily culmination of the sun and of the meridional altitudes of the planets. (2nd Instrument in the instrument book of the Istanbul observatory)

Observatory of Rayy (ancient Teheran), founded on the request of the eminent astronomerHamid b. al-Hidr al-Khugandî (2nd half of the 10th century c.e.) by the statesman Fakhr al-Dawla. It was built in order to solve the problem of whether the Earth’s inclination is permanent or changing using a sextant of ca. 20 m radius. After meticulous observations it was concluded that the inclination was decreasing over the course of time.

The Observatory of Samarqand. Model of the main building of the observatory founded by Muhammad Taragây b. Sâhruh Ulug Beg (1394 -1449), housing a colossal sextant with a radius of roughly 60 m. Reconstructed after remains of the original structure.
