Overview

Course content and focus areas

Romance language structures and cultures is a binational four-semester Master’s program jointly offered by the Institute of Romance Languages and Literatures of Goethe University Frankfurt and Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. Students who successfully complete the program obtain a Double Degree (Master of Arts and Laurea Magistrale) from the two universities.

The focus of the degree program lies on Romance linguistics with a particular orientation to empirical research. Special attention is paid to the linguistic structure (syntax, morphology and phonology) of the Romance languages from a comparative-contrastive perspective in relation to their variation and their comparison with German. In addition, students consolidate and improve their language skills in a Romance language of their choice (French, Italian or Spanish) and engage in the study of the literature and cultural productions in the language of their choice. Central competences that are trained and developed during the program are: excellent speaking and writing in the foreign language (French, Italian or Spanish), scientific handling of texts and media contents, competence in production of specialized texts (reviews, translations, journal articles), practices of international scientific work, oral and written presentation of scientific results in the foreign language, argumentation and discussion skills as well as the use of media and presentation methods.

A characteristic feature of this Master is the integrated and obligatory study stay in Venice in the second semester (with the option to extend the stay for a further semester). Thanks to the many international organizations and companies, as well as publishing houses and cultural institutions based in Frankurt am Main, enrolled students will receive the opportunity for completing hands-on projects and career-oriented internships.  The same holds for Venice with its cultural heritage, art events and important cultural institutions.

For whom?

The Master is suitable for students with a Bachelor Degree in Romance languages and literatures or similar programs, who would like to acquire further linguistic and intercultural competences by completing a double-degree program. The program prepares for further qualification in a doctoral program as well as for a professional career in cultural institutions, media, international organizations and companies.
