Invaluable. The Art of Literature and the Problem of Worth (Current Book Project)
The book examines how literature became a cipher for a special kind of value in the wake of Romanticism, doubly coded as invaluable. Spanning the rise of the problem of value as a category of political economy (Marx), an ethical-material problem (Nietzsche), an epistemic heuristic (Weber), and as a cultural form (Simmel) in literature and the consolidation of the human sciences between 1830 and 1930, it focuses on three figures of value between romanticism, realism, and modernism: surplus and superfluousness, credit-debt, achievement or performance (Leistung).
