Overview

Course content
and focus areas

The research-oriented master's program in “Drug Research - 4-semester for students with a bachelor's degree [AMF (4 Sem für BSc)]” is designed for graduates of a natural science with a bachelor's degree who want to gain in-depth insights into drug research and development.

Build on the basic scientific competencies acquired in the bachelor's program, the pharmaceutical competencies in Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical / Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Analysis, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, biochemical and molecularbiological basics of drug action, pharmacology and toxicology as well as pathophysiology / pathobiochemistry that are essential for pharmaceutical research are being taught in the first two semesters of the master program AMF (4 Sem für BSc) (basic phase). By attending selected courses of the Pharmacy state examination study program, students learn the biochemical and molecular-biological basics of the mode of action of drug substances and of drug metabolism, the connection between the chemistry of the drugs and the pharmacological properties, the differences of low molecular weight and recombinantly produced drugs, different dosage forms and routes of administration as well as issues of pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of drugs.

The degree program has a high proportion of scientific laboratory internships: in the basic phase in the form of teaching internships, in the research phase in the form of individual research internships. In each case, the practical skills acquired in the bachelor's degree program are built up.

In semester 3 and 4, the competences of scientific work are acquired and strengthened (research phase) by means of two major individual research internships (one can also be completed abroad or in the industry) and finally the master's thesis by working on current research topics. These research-oriented modules are accompanied by courses that deepen the various areas of drug discovery, from drug design to regulatory requirements in drug development and drug quality control. As part of the study program, students get to know the entire value chain of pharmaceuticals.

With a view from different disciplines and a high degree of interdisciplinarity, the graduates become a link in optimal drug research, with fields of activity both in research institutions and in industry.

The master study program “Drug Research - 4-semester for students with a bachelor's degree [AMF (4 Sem für BSc)]” is taught in German.

Conditions of admission

Admission prerequisites

  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Life Sciences, (Bio)-Medical Chemistry, Biophysics, Bioinformatics or
at least a comparable degree from a German university or a German university of applied sciences in the same or a related field of study with a standard period of study of at least six semesters or
an at least equivalent foreign degree in the same or related field with a standard duration of at least six semesters
  • Applicants with a foreign degree must contact the study counseling (Studienfachberatung) before applying!
  • Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification and a foreign undergraduate degree must also demonstrate sufficient knowledge of German according to the DSH regulations.

Provisional admission

Applicants who do not have a bachelor's degree at the time of application can apply for provisional admission to the master's program AMF (4 Sem für BSc) if at least 80% of the CP required for the bachelor's degree (usually 144 CP) have been successfully completed.

If the enrollment is successful, the bachelor's certificate must be handed in until the end of the first semester, otherwise the admission expires and the enrollment is to be withdrawn. The examination board decides on the provisional admission.

Mode of admission

The degree course is restricted.

The selection is made on the basis of the grade or provisional average grade of the previous degree and the result of a selection interview. Here are the dates of the interviews. No alternative dates can be offered. No-shows for the interview are rated with the worst rating (5). If the number of applicants exceeds three times the number of places to be awarded, a ranking is made according to the grade or preliminary grade of the previous degree. The best applicants for this ranking will be invited to the selection interview.
