Kurzvita

Katrin studied mineralogy at the GeoZentrum Nordbayern of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and received her diploma (grade 1.4) in 2011. Her thesis („Identifying clinopyroxene-sulphide co-precipitation, rejuvenation mechanisms and platinum-group element fractionation processes in young continental mantle roots“) was supervised by Prof. R. Klemd. From 2013 to 2016, Katrin was a PhD student at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt in a cooperation project with the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum. Her dissertation „Roman mining and metal production near the antique city of ULPIANA (Kosovo)“ was supervised by Prof. S. Klein and awarded with magna cum laude. Since 2016, Katrin is a postdoc researcher at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and investigates silver and bronze coinage in the project „Coinage and the Dynamics of Power: the Western Mediterranean 500-100 BC“.

Projekt

Münzen und die Dynamik der Macht: Der westliche Mittelmeerraum 500-100 v.Chr.

Katrin studies both silver (together with T. Birch) and bronze coinage by geochemical methods as part of the Lichtenberg project. She focuses particularly on the turbulent and defining period from the beginning of the 4th until the early 1st century BCE in which Rome transformed to the dominating power in the Western Mediterranean.

By analysing the chemical composition (major, minor and trace elements) and the lead isotope signatures as indicators of the potential provenance of the bullion, the following questions are addressed: How do conflicts and potential metal shortages influence the fineness of the coins? How do the bullion sources change in the course of time with Rome successively rising to the predominant power in Italy, and later, large parts of the Mediterranean region?
