Welcome to the winter term 2020/21 at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology!
Due to the Corona crisis, the winter term will be held online. The start of the lectures is postponed to Monday, November 2, 2020. All lectures will take place online until further notice.
Please visit the Goethe University website regularly for information on the status of developments.
At the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology, our primary commitment is to teaching, and we want to continue doing this in a reliable fashion under these challenging conditions. However, we are aware of the fact that the transition to digital teaching is going to be not that swift. You cannot simply replace a learning environment where students and teachers are co-present in a room every week at the same time by digital tools and online platforms.
Teaching digitally does not only require technological infrastructures, we will need to become acquainted with new and unfamiliar curricular concepts. This will also make demands on our time.
But we also see the beginning semester as an experimental situation that all of us can benefit from. As teaching staff, we will not just want to make do under the current restrictions, but also want to try out new formats of teaching and assess them in collaboration with our students to find out how teaching and learning processes can be facilitated within this new framework. At the same time, we will try to keep the additional investments of time - both of students and of staff - as minimal as possible.
In order to make sure that students do not experience problems and disadvantages because of the changes, the university administration has decided to handle study and exam regulations less strictly for the coming semester.
At the beginning of the term, students of the BA program Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology and of the MA program Science and Technology Studies will receive invitations by email to the online learning platforms (either BSCW or OLAT). BA students will be invited on the basis of their registration to the courses in the QIS/LSF system.
MA do not need to register for courses. Simply send an email to the professor or lecturer of the course you want to visit. Keep it short and simple without requirement for a response on his or her part, e.g. "I am enrolled in the MA STS and would like to register for your course xyz. Please invite me to the online course platform once this is up and working, thank you!"
Until further notice, the office hours of the lecturers will be held by telephone by appointment only; the institute is closed to the public, we can only be reached by email.
For updates and additional questions (e.g. access to the buildings, Goethe-Card, libraries, Bafög, cafeterias, etc.) please please consult the English language version of the corona crisis information page of Goethe University’s homepage , where you will find daily news about the university's operations under the conditions of the corona crisis.
Keep safe & stay healthy!
