The Institute´s department of public health belongs to the few university institutions of Hesse which adresses the area of public health. A traditional focus is on infectious diseases and lung diseases.  For example, as early as in 2005, staff members have published about Severe Acute Respiratory Synrdrome (SARS) coronavirus (SARS-CoV) which is closely related to SARS-CoV2 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

A further focus is on prevention and sports.  An interdisciplinary committee consisting of physicians from different specialities, scientists from the area of life sciences and sports sciences regularly adresses current public health topics. Both regional/community and international aspects within the area of public health are dealt with.
