Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)

The Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP) have been introduced as part of the Erasmus+ programme generation (2021 - 2027). They allow for short-term group mobilities involving a combination of physical and virtual phases. Partner universities develop joint mobility curricula and activities, while the virtual phase supports joint learning. This promotes international cooperation, improves the quality of teaching and strengthens students' intercultural skills. At the same time, the BIP offers students who are unable to undertake a long-term stay the opportunity to gain valuable experience abroad through a short-term programme. This makes Erasmus+ activities more inclusive and forward-looking.

  • The BIP must consist of a virtual and a physical phase.
  • The physical mobility must last between 5 and 30 days. Participants must be in the same place at the same time during
    this phase.
  • The virtual phase can take place before, during or after the physical phase. A combination of these phases is also
possible. The duration of the virtual phase is not specified.
  • There must be at least three Erasmus Higher Education Charter ("ECHE") partner institutions  from three different
programme countries (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, and North Macedonia).
  • Participants must receive at least 3 ECTS points for the programme.
  • A minimum of 10 mobile participants must travel and participate in the programme. Within a BIP, participants who remain
at the host institution and do not change location or country are not counted towards the 10 mobile participants.
  • There must be at least one Bilateral Agreement with the host university. A Multilateral Agreement between all
    participating universities is also possible.

The coordinating university has the main responsibility for the organisation, application process and management of a BIP and receives financial support in the form of OS funds (Organisational Funds). In most cases, it is also the host university.

Timeline of a BIP application as coordinating university:

The Erasmus+ Institutional Coordinator at Goethe University must apply for funding for the implementation of a BIP annually in advance to the DAAD, taking into account the application deadlines set at EU level.
Departments are required to submit their applications for the implementation of BIPs by 15 January each year. The approved funding can then be used to implement the requested programme in the period from 1 October of the same year to 30 September of the following year.

Funding:

OS funds range from €4,000 to €8,000 depending on the number of participants (minimum of 10 participants). A lump sum is reserved for the Global Office for administrative purposes, while the remaining amount is available to the respective department.

The OS funds can be used for various purposes related to the preparation, development, implementation and general administration of the BIP. In addition, these funds support programme management and can be used, for example, for personnel costs such as student assistants, teaching materials, printing costs, room costs, public relations, hospitality (proportionate and in accordance with the University's hospitality policy), translations, events, etc.

However, it is not permitted to use OS funds to finance mobilities or to increase individual financial support. Mobility participants are supported by the sending institution through Erasmus+ funding. This applies to both students and staff wishing to participate in a BIP.

Please refer to the Requirements section above.

Areas of responsibility:

The department is responsible for the content and organisational implementation of the BIP, including communication with partner universities, concrete planning of teaching content, organisation and implementation of the virtual or physical part of the programme, management of decentralised funding and preparation of study-related documents.

The Global Office can act as an advisory body and provide support in the administration of the BIP, including the provision of funding, the preparation of reporting documents and Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreements. The Global Office is also responsible for submitting the application to the DAAD.

Application for the coordination of a BIP::

The application must be submitted to the Global Office until 15th January of each year fo rthe following academic year using the form below

A BIP is coordinated by a partner university in a European programme country, while Goethe University participates as a partner university and sends mobile students and staff to the BIP. GU participants receive a mobility grant from their home university to support their participation in the programme.

Checkliste for departments - sending university

  • The Department must ensure that there is an Erasmus Agreement with the host university.
  • The Department agrees with the Global Office whether and how many students can be funded for a BIP by completing the
BIP application form for sending universities.
  • The Department promotes the event and selects the participants.
  • The Department registers the participants with the host university.
  • The Department reports the names, matriculation numbers and e-mail addresses of the participants to the Global Office.
(at least 2 months before departure)
  • The Global Office emails the participants to complete the application form and guides them through the Erasmus+
    application process.
  • The Department approves the student's Learning Agreement.
  • Everything concerning content, materials, procedures, travel and accommodation has to be planned and clarified by the
department with the host university and the students.

Recognition::

Students must have at least 3 ECTS recognised at their home university in order to participate in a BIP. Coordination with the head of the study programme is therefore necessary. Ideally, the BIP should be integrated into the participants' curriculum, whereby the ECTS awarded must be recognised as part of the respective degree programme at Goethe University. This recognition must be agreed in advance with the Erasmus programme representatives and the responsible examination office of the department and recorded in the Online Learning Agreement.

Application for participation in a BIP::

The application must be submitted to the Global Office until the 15th of January of each year for the following academic year using the form below.

  • Participation of students in a BIP requires that the responsible department at Goethe University is involved in the organisation of the BIP together with the international partners and that the attendance phase takes place abroad. The department selects the participating students and informs the Global Office. In some cases, students can participate in a BIP abroad even if the GU is not involved in the organisation of the event. In this case, however, the department must approve the participation of its students and ensure the accreditation of the ECTS that the student will receive for this BIP.
