Christmas get-together for Accompanying Partners

This beautiful afternoon was dedicated to accompanying partners of international researchers at GU. A great opportunity to get to know each other and have questions answered by one of our senior researcher advisers.

Tasting some traditional German Advent and Christmas sweets accompanied by seasonal music we indulged into creative Christmas handcrafts. Surely the GWC was able to convey some of the seasonal feeling.

Visit to Frankfurt's Christmas Market

Crowded alleys and colorful stalls, gingerbread hearts and cold rainy weather, steaming hot mulled wine and beautiful local handcrafts. Frankfurt's Christmas market is defenitely one of Germany's most popular ones. We took an extensive walk through this picturesque festivity and finished with a visit to the Old Nicolay Church for a traditional pipe organ service.

Guided City Tour

On November 9th, the GWC took a group of researchers and their families through the historical downtown of Frankfurt. Starting at the Main Tower, our very experienced guide showed us the beautiful view of Frankfurt and its surrounding mountain ranges. The other stops included the Alte Oper, the Pauluskirche and the historic city centre including the cathedral, where our guide shared interesting stories and anecdotes to introduce the group to the 2000 years of Frankfurt’s history. Finally the group completed the trip by having traditional Hessian lunch and Ebbelwoi in the cozy neighborhood of Sachsenhausen.

Romantic Tour: Excursion to the Rheingau

As one of the unforgettable highlights among GWC’s activities in 2013 we went with a group of 21 international researchers on a full day excursion to the UNESCO Rhine Valley. On October 13th, while enjoying the magnificent view over the vineyards of the Rheingau, the group took a walk above the river Rhine through the Niederwald. After a visit to the fairy tale castle of Rheinstein we had an enjoyable boat trip along the river followed by a short exploration of the wine-growing town of Rüdesheim. The group completed the trip by having dinner and enjoying last year’s delicious wine production in a traditional restaurant amidst the bountiful vineyards.

Hike and pot luck picnic in Frankfurt’s Green belt

On July 12th, the Goethe Welcome Centre took a group of international researchers to a 6km hike into the green surroundings of Frankfurt (around Nieder-Eschbach).  Walking through the lush fields and picking sweet cherries from the trees, the group completed this trip with a most colourful picnic on a hilly apple grove.
