International Guest Lecturer in the Winter Semester 23/24

The "International Campus" programme enables lecturers from foreign universities to teach at Goethe University as part of a guest lectureship. Faculty 12 was able to recruit Dr. Ebru Ersari from Kafkas University (Turkey) as a guest lecturer for the upcoming winter semester as part of the program. She will hold a block seminar in January 2024.

Dr. Ebru Ersari (Kafkas University, Turkey) received her MA and PhD degrees in Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia in the United States. Her research interests are in-service and preservice teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching, the relationship between teacher knowledge and professional noticing as well as the use of technology in Mathematics Education from an international perspective. She has taught  Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Information Technologies classes. She visited Lithuania and Poland for gaining more international perspective in Mathematics Education. During her visit at the Goethe University, her goal is to exchange further knowledge and have a deeper understanding of Mathematics Education in Germany. This cross-cultural exposure will help her gain a more diverse and global perspective in the field.

She will offer an in-depth seminar on "Advantages and limitations of ChatGPT for developing lesson plans from an international perspective." Her course focuses on lesson planning in Mathematics Education on the elementary school level with a special focus on the possibilities that an AI chatbot, ChatGPT, offers. Students will learn how to efficiently use (but also critically reflect on the usage of) ChatGPT in the context of lesson plan development. The course will take on an international perspective in order to detect differences the AI suggests on an international scale, e.g., on how the AI does not correspond to the national norms and traditions of German Mathematics Education. Finally, through the discourse between student participants and Dr. Ersari, advantages and limitations of ChatGPTfor lesson planning will be identified.
