How does the application process work?

The application process

Applications are only accepted for the winter semester and can only be submitted online via the digital application platform.

The application platform is open exclusively during the application period. The next application period for the funding year 2023/24 will take place from July 10 - 28, 2023 (until 4 pm!).

To access the online application, you need your HRZ account. You receive the login together with your Goethe Card after your enrollment. The password will be sent to you by regular mail.

If you do not receive your HRZ account by the application deadline, you can register with your private email address, provided the following requirement is met:

  • You have already applied for a study program at Goethe University for the winter semester.

What other documents do I need to submit with my application?

Typically, you do not need any further documents

Your personal information, previous course information, and relevant grades will be automatically retrieved from the student database, if available. If any of your personal information is erroneous, you will need to contact the Registrar's Office to correct it. If information about your program of study is wrong, please get in touch with the appropriate examination office.

You will also be asked to answer questions about your background and demographics. This information is voluntary. It is used only for scholarship selection purposes and provided to departments in an anonymous form.

Documents that may need to be uploaded to the online application:


  • Grade report (pdf format)
  • BAföG certificate (pdf format)

The BAföG certificate should be from the semester in which you are applying or your last semester of study. If you are applying for the first semester and expect to receive BAföG, please upload a PDF file containing your BAföG application and the result of the online BAföG calculator.

If your grade is not automatically recognized by the system, there may be various reasons for this:

  • Your grade is not yet available or has not yet been entered. In this case, please enter the grade yourself and upload documented proof of this grade. For law students, it is necessary to convert the grade points into grade values using a conversion table.
  • The grade of the Bachelor's degree is not yet available or has not yet been entered. In this case, please enter your Bachelor's degree grade yourself and upload documented  proof of this grade.

Proof of special achievements

The online application does not require you to upload documentation about how you have overcome personal challenges, your community involvement, or other exceptional achievements such as internships, etc. However, we may request such documentation to verify your information, so you should be prepared to provide it.
