Selection Criteria

General criteria

Academic performance

The main evaluation is based on academic performance and takes into account previous academic achievements and progress.

Your grades will only be compared with those of students in the same faculty, in the same stage of study and, in the case of large programs, in the same program.

The grades that are relevant depends on the phase of your studies. An overview is given below. Students in Faculty 16 and Pharmacy should note that special regulations apply.

Social commitment

This includes extracurricular activities, such as:

  • Volunteer work
  • Social, community, university or political involvement
  • Participation in religious communities, associations or clubs

Overcoming personal and social challenges

Certain social considerations are taken into account in the assessment, such as:

  • Family background (e.g. educational background, migration background)
  • Employment and financial background
  • Illnesses and impairments
  • Care of one's own children
  • Care or loss of immediate family members

What grades count in the evaluation process?

Relevant grades

Students in their first semester

  • The grade of the Abitur or other form of higher education entrance qualification applies.
  • For applicants in a second degree program, the grade of the first degree program will be considered.

Students in their second semester or higher

  • From the second semester onwards, academic performance and progress are assessed.
  • Academic performance is measured according to the CP-weighted average grade, which factors in the grades of all completed modules recorded in the system in accordance with the associated credit points.
  • Academic progress is measured according to the credit points earned in relation to the semester of study.
  • The reference semester is always the previous winter semester.

Master's students

  • The grade of the Bachelor's degree is used.
  • If this is not yet available, the grade with which you applied for the degree program applies.
  • For applicants in a second degree program, the grade of the previous Master's program is considered.
