Application with Degree not Obtained in Germany

We are delighted that you have decided to continue your studies at Goethe University and are applying for a master's program.

The following documents are necessary for your application:

Certificates

  • Certificate of first, undergraduate-level higher education degree (typically a Bachelor's, but also Diplom, Magister, etc.)

If you are unsure whether your initial undergraduate degree aligns with the content and theme of the program offered here, please contact the academic advisory service (you can find the relevant contact information in the brief description of each program on the Master's program overview page).

  • "Transcript of Records"

This document serves as evidence of the content of your studies. If there is no Transcript of Records in your university system, please send us a comparable document with a list of subjects and grades.

This document is required when specific course contents need to be verified. If you are unsure, please upload the Transcript using the upload function or send it to the application address provided.

  • APS Certificate

Applicants from Vietnam and the People's Republic of China are required to submit an APS Certificate in its original form.

  • Proof of Secondary School Completion

(Abitur, IB, Lise diplomasi, high school diploma, etc.)

All certificates and language proficiency documents must be submitted in the original language and with an official translation into German or English. Certificates, proofs, and translations must be officially certified.

German language certificate

For Master's programs taught in German, the DSH-2 certificate must be submitted by the application deadline.

Enrollment without passing the DSH-2 exam (or an equivalent certificate) is not possible, even if you have received academic admission to the Master's program.

For master's programs taught in English, no German language proficiency proof is required. However, basic knowledge of German can be extremely helpful.

The following language certificates are recognized as equivalent to DSH-2:

  • TestDaF: All results with at least TDN 4
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2
  • KMK-Prüfung: Deutsches Sprachdiplom Zweite Stufe (DSD II), consistently at level C1
  • Telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule: With results of "satisfactory," "good," or "very good"
  • KDS and GDS (Kleines/Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom), Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP)
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung II

Additionally, the following educational qualifications exempt you from providing DSH proof:

  • Assessment test (Studienkolleg) with a German language examination
  • German Abitur and equivalent qualifications in Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein (with German language)
  • Foreign educational certificates according to the KMK decision dated June 2, 1995, as amended on March 23/24, 2016:
  •    Mittlere Reife from a German-speaking school (continuous German instruction until completing Mittlere Reife and at least a "satisfactory" grade in German in the German leaving certificate) in combination with one of the following qualifications:
  •    A-Level "German" from the British General Certificate of Education, Higher Grade in "German" in the Scottish Certificate of Education, or Standard Level in German from the IB Diploma.

Additional documents

In accordance with the admission requirements and program-specific criteria for the respective master's programs, additional documents and evidence may be required, typically including:

Language certificates (e.g. English)

  • Proof of additional language skills. Typically, this refers to English language proficiency, which can be demonstrated through your school leaving certificate or a foreign language certificate.

Other evidence and documentation

  • Proof of relevant coursework in the bachelor's program.
  • Additional documents, such as a curriculum vitae (CV), a statement of motivation, or letters of recommendation.

Please refer to the master's program overview page for this information before starting your online application. There, you can click on your desired program and find details about the specific documents required for the application for each program.
