Service Learning

TELLUS | to teach each other - to learn from each other is a service learning project aimed at students at university as well as in schools: Students from different disciplines support school classes for newcomers (refugees, late repatriates and immigrants). The target group of lateral entrants are young people aged at least 16 who are no longer included in the regular school system. They have only a short window of opportunity to learn German and develop career prospects. Therefore, this target group has special needs, which poses challenges for teachers and professionals at schools.

The Crespo Foundation, together with Goethe University Frankfurt and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, has launched the service learning project TELLUS to support teachers and professionals of socio-educational support in these classes. Students from study programs for teaching, business education, social work, educational science, as well as psychology work closely with the teachers and professionals in multi-professional teams. For one year, they volunteer at the schools for around eleven hours per week. They help in the classroom, but also support and accompany the young people outside of school, for example in writing job-applications or in joint activities. In training courses, the students are being prepared for their work with people with refugee experience and their associated demands. In addition, they participate in professional supervision during their work and they discuss their experiences in accompanying courses at their home universities. Through this, they can fulfil requirements for mandatory internships in the different study programs. They also gain didactic and socio-pedagogical experience for future professional practice. This makes the project a win-win situation for everyone involved: the school students, the university students as well as the teachers and professionals.
