Overview
General Program Description
The life sciences focus on the study of biological processes at a wide range of levels. This includes molecular and cellular processes as well as interactions within an ecosystem. This leads to a biological understanding of medical, biotechnological, and ecological relationships. The research findings of the life sciences are of essential importance for the informed management of living nature, as well as for its responsible use and conservation. The degree programs in the department impart the knowledge, methods, and skills necessary for scientific work in the life sciences today.
The Bachelor’s program in Life Sciences provides knowledge of the various subdisciplines of biology and related sciences. It provides the foundations for the study of life processes—from the molecular level through subcellular compartments, cells, tissues, and organs, to unicellular and multicellular organisms, and ultimately ecosystems—always taking into account evolutionary history.
The Life Sciences program aims to provide students with comprehensive expertise in all areas of biology and also imparts the foundational knowledge in chemistry, physics, and statistics necessary for understanding biological phenomena. Through its selection of required electives, the program enables students to specialize in a specific field and equips them to conduct independent scientific research using modern life science research methods.
The Riedberg Campus is distinguished by its connection to the Science Garden, where field experiments can be conducted, as well as by its proximity to the two Max Planck Institutes for Biophysics and for Brain Research. This offers graduates excellent career opportunities after graduation.
