Welcome to the information page for the master's program in Philosophy of Religion!
Dear Students,
As you may know, “religion” can be studied from various perspectives. However, the Philosophy of Religion degree program offered at Goethe University Frankfurt is unique in Germany. Since the early 1980s, students have been able to complete this program as a Magister degree.
The current research-oriented master's program in Philosophy of Religion focuses on religion-related questions from both historical and systematic perspectives, which are explored through philosophical, theological, and religious studies practices. With the support of strong partners, such as the Institute for Research in Philosophy of Religion and the German Society for Philosophy of Religion, the program helps students prepare for their professional careers.
The program aims to develop critical thinking, sensitivity to religious issues, and the ability to engage in discourse on complex social challenges. It also deepens knowledge related to religion. Graduates often pursue careers in the humanities and academia or actively and sustainably apply their expertise in the economy and society.

Information
Requirements
The master's program in philosophy of religion is designed for bachelor's graduates in
- philosophy,
- religious studies,
- Catholic theology,
- Protestant theology,
as well as graduates of professional degree programs with prior knowledge of philosophy,
who wish to pursue academic specialization in the branch of philosophy of religion.
Time Table
As a research-oriented degree program, it ensures a comprehensive academic engagement with genuinely religious-philosophical questions from both historical and, most importantly, systematic perspectives. Phenomena and traditions within religious contexts (including Christianity and other religions) are examined based on philosophical standards of rationality. This process is grounded, on the one hand, in discussions of key issues in theoretical and practical philosophy, and on the other, in an exemplary exploration of topics in theology and religious studies.
Possible Jobs
The master's program in Philosophy of Religion develops, in its initial phase, the ability for precise analysis, presentation, and discussion of concepts and reasoning patterns within the philosophy of religion. The second phase focuses on building the skills to develop and defend one's own academic perspectives. By fostering these key skills, the program prepares students for a variety of professional fields requiring advanced qualifications. Graduates are equipped to take on specialized educational roles in higher education institutions and adult education. At the same time, they gain access to interdisciplinary roles in business and society, where the coherent evaluation of complex issues in intercultural and multireligious social contexts is essential.
