Catherine Whittaker is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology and Head of Department. She is also a member of the Committee for Equality and Anti-Discrimination (AGA) of the Faculty, on the editorial board of the journal Feminist Anthropology and a member of the working group Anti-Racism and Academic Equity of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropologists (DGSKA). 

Research and teaching interests

  • Latin America (especially rural Central Mexico), U.S.-Mexico border region (particularly urban California), transnational perspectives; 
  • Anthropology of security (including vigilance), militarization, and structural violence (including gender-based violence) as well as peacebuilding, democracy, and affects (with a focus on love);
  • Women's, migrants' and racialized subjects' activism, power, and subjectivation;
  • Critical Anthropology (with a focus on feminist, Indigenous, and decolonial theories, kollaborative ethnographic methods, as well as inter- and transdisciplinary approaches); 
  • Ethnographic writing and Public Anthropology
