Generative Artificial Intelligence Can Significantly Reduce the Number of Animal Experiments

Researchers at Goethe University and Philipps University Marburg, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP, have developed a new artificial intelligence to reduce animal experiments. The AI, called genESOM, was trained to “learn” the structure of small datasets. It uses this learned information to generate new data points. These data points reproduce the properties of experimentally collected data as accurately as if they had been obtained in laboratory experiments. In the future, genESOM could reduce the number of laboratory animals needed for testing new active substances by between 30 and 50 percent.

Britta Baumert, Catholic Theologian

For as long as she can remember, Britta Baumert knew one thing: she wanted to become a teacher. Having reached that decision while still at school, it initially did not seem so important what she would teach rather than the fact that she would teach at all. Although she was raised Catholic and active in parish life as a child and teenager, religion classes at school did little to inspire her. She also viewed the Church with a healthy degree of skepticism. Catholic theology, in other words, was not the obvious path.

LOEWE Starting Professorship for Research on Social and Demographic Impacts of Climate Change

Environmental sociologist Prof. Dr. Tobias Rüttenauer explores the relationship between nature and society. For example, he investigates whether people adopt more environmentally friendly behavior when they are directly affected by the consequences of climate change. After conducting research in the United Kingdom, most recently at University College London, Rüttenauer is now continuing his work at Goethe University with a LOEWE Start Professorship in Quantitative Social Science at the Center for Critical Computational Studies (C3S). To support his research on climate justice, the state of Hesse is providing €1.3 million in LOEWE funding over the next six years.

Evolution in Fast-Forward: How Thale Cress Adapts – or Goes Extinct

In an unprecedented field experiment, an international research team led by Goethe University Frankfurt, the University of California, Berkeley, and CNRS Montpellier investigated the evolutionary adaptation of thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) to a wide range of climates, from the Alps to the Negev Desert. At 30 locations worldwide, team members sowed the plants, monitored their development, and analyzed genetic changes. The result: many Arabidopsis populations rapidly adapted to local climates – some, however, went extinct. The findings demonstrate how genetic diversity ensures population survival.

Four millennia of history of culture

Formed around 15 million years ago by an asteroid impact, the Nördlinger Ries is a truly unique geological landscape. The region is also of great interest from a settlement history perspective. This is highlighted in the recently published first volume of interdisciplinary research conducted between Ipf and the Kartäusertal on the western edge of the Ries. The publication features archaeological, archaeobotanical, and scientific theses completed at Goethe University and the University of Tübingen.
