Course content and focus areas
The one-year master’s program in the field of Archaeology and the History of Culture of the Ancient Near East at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at Goethe University Frankfurt builds on a four-year bachelor’s degree. The program consists of five modules—four compulsory and one compulsory elective module—that emphasize both academic and practical professional training. The program provides advanced knowledge of subject matter and methods while fostering the practice of sound academic principles. Students are guided in producing their own scholarly contributions in both written and oral formats and presenting them in an academic setting. The goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding tailored to the specific research question, which may also involve independent work and research on the extensive written records of ancient Near Eastern cultures. The program aims to further refine the research and academic profile established during the bachelor’s degree, preparing students for careers in teaching and research.
In addition to “traditional” teaching and assessment methods, oral contributions play a central role—this includes designing and delivering courses, making substantial oral contributions during academic instruction, and giving presentations.
Graduates of the program have the opportunity to work for a doctorate in the field of Archaeology and the History of Culture of the Ancient Near East.
