About the program
Atmospheric science is a field within the geosciences, firmly rooted in physics. It investigates the processes that govern weather and climate using numerical, experimental, and theoretical methods. At its core, the Master's program trains you—both in subject matter and methodology—to conduct fundamental research, enabling you to understand atmospheric processes in their scientific context and apply this knowledge to questions of societal relevance—for example, in the fields of climate, environment, energy, and risk management.
The Master's program "Atmospheric and Climate Sciences" offers you considerable freedom to tailor your studies to your interests. This entirely English-language program prepares you to lead your own research projects. From your very first semester, you are free to choose your focus areas and engage with the following topics:
- atmospheric and mesoscale dynamics,
- boundary layer meteorology,
- atmospheric chemistry and physics,
- numerical modeling and climate statistics,
- atmospheric measurement techniques.
You will deepen your expertise in two sub-fields, complemented by specializations, elective courses, and up to two minor subjects.
As a research-oriented institute, we offer numerous Master's thesis topics that allow you to gain independent project and research experience—an important foundation for pursuing PhD and building a career in industry. Additional opportunities arise from our proximity to the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Frankfurt economic region.
